The 4th of July weekend marks a celebration of the birth of a revolutionary, freedom-inclined country in North America. Memorable moments The 4th of July weekend also represents the halfway point for 2009, a memorable period in the celebrity world that saw the passing (and deaths) of Farrah Fawcett, Ed McMahon, and of course, the King of Pop Michael Jackson. The latter has provided an outpouring of sorrow and tributes - a shadowy valley after the peaks and highs of recent prize fighting performances by Juan Manuel Lopez, Manny Pacquiao, Vladimir Klitschko, and Miguel Cotto.

Since Tuesday at 12:01 am EST the faces of many NBA teams have been changed, and in at least one case the very foundation of the team has undergone a free agent upgrade. To be sure the 2009 NBA free agent season got off to a very fast start.

It is not news that the folks over at Stewart-Haas racing, smoke himself included, are thinking about adding a third entry for the team in 2010. While it seems that the SHR team is strong enough for a third team, but the question then becomes who will drive the third entry? By taking a look at the news, and trends reported by Jayski, Autoracingsport.com, and my other fellow NASCAR examiners; both nationally and in Atlanta and Louisville, we come up with three possible candidates. Two of the three seem more likely than the third.

In what appears to be a very strange story a group of season ticket holders have hired Sports super agent Drew Rosenhaus as their agent to help them negotiate lower season ticket prices for the Florida Panthers.

The actual lawsuit in question here is the NFL's exclusive contract with Reebok for NHL merchandise. However according to CBSsports.com, the actual issue the NFL wants a ruling on is to declare itself a single business entity, instead of a loose collection of 32 separate business enterprises. Essentially the NFL wants a permanent decision by the Supreme Court that would allow it to avoid all anti trust lawsuits. If the Supreme Court rules in favor of the NFL, that they will be free to squash team relocation plans, merchandising deals, and virtually anything that the league doesn't agree with. This would make the NFL offices the ultimate decider of all things NFL related business.

A look at the 2009 Jaguars draft, and if it will lead to on the field success

Every so often we see a once elite team in NASCAR's Sprint Cup series lose a step, fall behind their competition some of the time the team rights itself and continues on, but some of the time the once elite team simply fades away. Such as the teams of Robert Yates Racing or Petty Enterprises.

The New Jersey Nets are now one step closer to a move to Brooklyn. In a move that has had more than its fair share of legal and financial problems the Nets owner Bruce Ratner cut a deal that will eventually lead to the construction of a new NBA arena on the site that was once proposed for a domed stadium for the Brooklyn Dodgers.

"Vicious" Victor Ortiz is one of the most inspirational and upright individuals that I have ever had the privilege to meet. I visited with Victor and his girlfriend for a few minutes on April 4th in Austin on Golden Boy's "Lightweight Lightning" boxing event at the Frank Erwin Center.

It looks like NASCAR will move ahead with its Nationwide Series COT program as soon as 2010. Of course they will wait to talk with Nationwide series owners to help figure out a why to best activate this program, but it looks like a version of the COT will debut in the Nationwide series in 2010. At the moment it looks like the COT will be used at both Daytona, and Talladega, along with both road course races at Montreal and Watkins Glen. That would give the owners and NASCAR five races to shake down the new COT platform under competitive circumstances.

The recent and untimely passing of Michael Jackson has brought a profound sorrow and grief to many around the world. To most around the world . . . His loss is deeply felt, by those he touched, and by those who sought to touch him.

In a move that will become official once the NFL offices open Monday morning and the players involved pass their physicals the Detroit LIons have traded away Safety Gerald Alexander to the Jacksonville Jaguars for Wide out Dennis Northcutt.

The Omaha Royals hoped life wouldn't return to what has been normal (losing 17 of their last 22, and going just 11-21 at Rosenblatt this season) The Royals hope that finally, Omaha can be looked upon as home sweet home.

In a word, no, the Truck series will be around for many years to come as the folks who run NASCAR absolutely love this series. However to keep this series viable it must return to its roots, it must once again become a low cost alternative for new teams, drivers, and sponsor to get use to the world of NASCAR. This is one of those rare occasions that NASCAR fans should really applaud the executives in charge of NASCAR; they are attempting to be extremely proactive in trying to rein in the cots associated with operating a truck series team.

While the minor leagues are always a place for fans to see possible future major league stars come through town, it's still a rare treat when a true major league starter hits the scene. It's an even rarer happening when a major league player the caliber of Manny Ramirez can be seen, taint or not.

There are a lot of indicators that seem to be suggesting that the NHL is finally starting to come out of its slump set off by the lockout of 2005. Either that or the intriguing NHL playoff match ups got the people out of their houses and to the hockey arena for them. It also seems that the rematch of the Detroit Red Wings and the Pittsburgh Penguins was a story line that engaged both hard core NHL fans and your casual American hockey fans as well.

This is yet further proof that nothing has changed for the Detroit Lions. Today they have signed Center Dominic Raiola to an extension that will keep him here until 2013 and pay him an additional 20 million dollars.

I had the great privilege of meeting and interviewing boxing's rising star in "Vicious" Victor Ortiz on April 4th in Austin, Texas. Not only is he a very talented and dedicated boxer, he is one of the most inspirational people I have ever met in my life. The young man has undergone tremendous adversity starting in his early childhood, and through sheer perseverance and guts, is now on the cusp of a world title belt.

The Mayweather vs. Marquez fight should be held either as an undercard or co-main event bout together with the Manny Pacquiao vs. Miguel Cotto fight, and preferably on October 17 (and not in November).
